The old time people used to say that the Barbados Railway was mentioned in the Bible, among the creeping things of this Earth.

With family roots on the island, Jim Horsford has been in the perfect position to gather information and old photos of the railway on Barbados.

The railway opened in 1881 as a 3’6” gauge line with an assortment of British-built locos but under the guidance of E.R. Calthrop (of Leek & Manifold, Barsi Light Railway fame) it was later converted 2’6” gauge and was operated by three types of Baldwin tank engine.

As well as early photographs and works illustrations of the locos, most of the available early picture postcards are also to be found in this book. The railway closed in the 1930s but is still traceable and family recollections have provided first-hand accounts of this narrow gauge paradise.
