This is the first in an occassional series of lavishly illustrated 'Steam and Rail' editions from 'Locomotives International', printed on high quality gloss paper, page size 215 x 275 mm (8" x 10").
The accent is on steam, in both former halves of Germany, and on all gauges, from the industrial grime of Alsdorf to the pretty narrow gauge lines of Wangerooge island. The many gricers who visited Germany for the last of steam in the 1970s will find familiar locomotives in action on the Rheine-Emden line, and a representative selection of DB types in Joachim Stübben's early photos. Features on the East and West German narrow gauge show an excellent variety of DB, DR. and industrial locos, some of which are rarely illustrated, and some other rarities are the experimental locomotives of the 1920s and 30s, each of which receives a description and illustration.
The various chapters have been provided by a number of well-known British and German railway writers and photographers, each contributing from their particular area of expertise. Their writings are in an easily readable style that makes the subject accessible to all levels of readership, and photographs of the rarer types form a useful point of reference for modellers.
